Dawn photography exploration around Salford and Manchester
David hit the streets of Salford last week for a photo walk with Notquitelight. Together we explored the old and the new offerings of Salford and Manchester as dawn broke over the city. Amazing light and great to get out early and capture something different. I'd highly recommend it.
Photography Tips for a Dawn Photowalk
Arrive before sunrise to catch the best light. For dawn photography, the most atmospheric light often appears before the sun breaks the horizon. In built up areas such as Salford and Manchester, early morning light reflects beautifully off the canals, glass buildings and quiet streets, creating soft colour hues and long shadows mixed with street lighting to create a very moody aesthetic.
Arriving 30–60 minutes before sunrise gives you time to settle, observe how the light changes, and capture the subtle shift from night to day.
Keep your camera settings simple in low light. Early morning light levels can be low, especially before sunrise. For a dawn photowalk use a wider aperture (f/1.4–f/4) for handheld shots to let in as much light as possible. Increase ISO gradually rather than rushing to very slow shutter speeds which can lead to blurring. If using a tripod, slow down, consider each shot and experiment with longer exposures
Working simply helps you stay present and responsive to changing light, a big part of successful dawn street and landscape photography.
Look for quiet human moments. One of the joys of a dawn photowalk is how still the city feels. Early commuters, lone cyclists, or people opening cafés can become subtle focal points in your images.
Including small human moments adds scale, story, and emotional depth, especially in wide urban scenes.
Oh and dress warm, it was really cold at 4.30am in the middle of winter! Who knew!
